Michael Andreas of Andreas Consulting has had an interesting career. For over thirty years, he worked as an engineer for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Illinois prior to transitioning to work as a private consultant in 2008. His experience at NRCS restoring streams and wetlands and performing engineering analyses for a variety of work on retired agricultural lands prepared him for the projects he works on now as a private consultant.

Modeling a Complex, Multi-Basin Drainage System with GeoSTORM

Andreas’s current practice continues to focus heavily on stormwater modeling for small urban and rural watersheds. He had the opportunity to use GeoSTORM recently on a golf course near Maryville, Illinois. The golf course was experiencing nuisance flooding due to the cumulative stormwater flow from two adjoining subwatersheds and a detention basin with poor drainage due to a recent design modification. Excess stormwater, trash, and other debris routinely caused nuisance flooding in the golf course fairway and other maintenance issues for the owner of the golf course and the abutting landowner, Southern Illinois University. The solution required that the detention basin be modified to allow flow to continue downstream with minimal downstream impact. Specifically, one of the several subwatersheds in the project area has a lake, which was modeled to store the additional storm flow from the modified basin by reducing the storm flow without impacting the downstream recipients.

About Michael Andreas

Michael Andreas, PE, is the owner of Andreas Consulting Services and a licensed professional civil engineer with over four decades of experience in civil and stormwater engineering. Specializing in complex drainage design, regulatory compliance, and multi-scenario analysis, he has built a reputation for delivering practical, high-quality solutions tailored to each project’s unique constraints, combining deep technical knowledge with real-world application. Committed to efficiency and innovation throughout his career, Michael most recently incorporated GeoSTORM into his workflow to streamline stormwater modeling and deliver greater value to his clients.

Running Scenarios with an All-in-One Platform

Andreas appreciated his ability to run different “what if” scenarios and model flow within each subwatershed and then within the greater project boundaries and to assess the effects of different stormwater management alternatives. He appreciated the “all-inclusive” features of GeoSTORM, which allowed Andreas to select from different base maps in the process of catchment delineation and to import into a GeoSTORM project file everything from soil data to curve numbers, contour maps, and all additional requirements for performing a TR-55 stormwater analysis. Once core parameters of the project had been defined, Andreas was able to modify the project design by manipulating culvert placement and making other modifications to optimize flow. Ultimately, the software provided a platform on which to experiment and try out different solutions to assess the limits of different stormwater management designs.

Consolidating Every Workflow Inside One Integrated Platform

Andreas has used CivilGEO’s technical support extensively, initially as he explored the many diverse capabilities of GeoSTORM, and then later as he navigated the stormwater modeling issues associated with specific projects. At one time, he recalled receiving help from CivilGEO at 1 am in the morning as he worked to resolve a question he had with his project. Andreas appreciates the fact that he no longer needs to rely on separate software applications to accomplish what GeoSTORM can manage entirely within one software platform. He estimates that the “all-in-one” character of GeoSTORM helps him save 60% of his time, an important advantage considering that Andreas works as a solo practitioner. He considers the use of GeoSTORM indispensable to the work of a stormwater modeling engineer.

“I don’t know any software in the 40 some years of me doing this that could do what GeoSTORM could do. That was fantastic. It did everything very well.”
