GeoSTORM Brings New Efficiency to Stiffler McGraw's Project Delivery
Ben Young is a project designer in the transportation division at Stiffler McGraw & Associates, a full-service consulting firm providing engineering services to municipalities across central and western Pennsylvania. With many municipal clients and demanding project schedules, efficient project delivery is a priority. Prior to using GeoSTORM, Young said many routine aspects of stormwater model development were completed manually or required several separate software applications, making the process time-intensive and less productive.
After adopting GeoSTORM, workflows at Stiffler McGraw & Associates became more efficient and focused, helping the firm deliver stormwater solutions more quickly and within project schedule constraints. Young described a project in eastern Pennsylvania involving the replacement of several structures spanning waterways as one that demonstrated GeoSTORM’s strengths.
About Stiffler McGraw & Associates
Founded in 1989 by David R. Stiffler and the late Steven R. McGraw, Stiffler McGraw & Associates is a full-service consulting firm headquartered in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The firm provides civil engineering, surveying, and architectural design services across transportation, stormwater management, water supply, wastewater, structural engineering, and related disciplines. With multiple offices and decades of growth, Stiffler McGraw & Associates has built a strong reputation as a trusted regional resource for municipalities and private clients throughout Pennsylvania.
Delineating Subbasins and Cross-Checking Calculations Became Seamless
The eastern Pennsylvania project was complex, requiring the design team to define numerous subbasins within a 100-acre project area and perform multiple stormwater calculations to confirm the structures were sized correctly. Young used GeoSTORM’s support for different hydrologic methods – including SCS TR-55, the Rational Method, the Modified Rational Method, and others – to cross-check calculations and validate the final results. He also used GeoSTORM’s catchment delineation tools and access to cloud-based maps and datasets to analyze terrain and generate drainage boundaries for the project’s subbasins. Because GeoSTORM integrates these workflows into one software platform, the design team could complete the model more easily and efficiently. Young estimates that using GeoSTORM reduced total project time by more than 60 percent.
Built-In Data Tools and Timely Support Distinguish GeoSTORM
Young identified several favorite features, including easy downloading of DEM files and other data, automatic delineation of subwatersheds, and the ability to run multiple scenarios to calculate time of concentration accurately. The firm has also used CivilGEO’s technical support team extensively. Young reports that CivilGEO’s experts are highly responsive with project-specific support, to the point that the support almost feels “in-house.” Young considers GeoSTORM invaluable for engineering firms that want to shorten stormwater workflows and improve productivity.
“I think when you look across the reviews online, the number one constant between all of them is time saved. I think that’s invaluable in our professions and I think it helps us tremendously.”
