Ben Young is a project designer in the transportation division at Stiffler McGraw & Associates, which provides engineering services to multiple municipalities in the central and western regions of Pennsylvania. Given the firm’s many clients and demanding work schedule, time management is a priority. Prior to using GeoSTORM, Young shares that many routine aspects of stormwater model development were done manually or with several different software applications, which was time-intensive and unproductive.

GeoSTORM Brings New Efficiency to Stiffler McGraw’s Project Delivery

After downloading GeoSTORM software, workflows at Stiffler McGraw and Associates became much more efficient and focused, allowing the firm to deliver needed solutions to clients quickly and within a reasonable time. Young describes one project in Eastern Pennsylvania that involved the replacement of several structures spanning waterways as one that really leveraged GeoSTORM’s strengths.

About Stiffler McGraw & Associates

Founded in 1989 by David R. Stiffler and the late Steven R. McGraw, Stiffler McGraw & Associates is a full-service consulting firm headquartered in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The firm provides complete civil engineering, surveying, and architectural design services spanning transportation, stormwater management, water supply, wastewater, and structural engineering. With multiple offices and decades of steady growth, Stiffler McGraw & Associates has built a strong reputation as a trusted regional resource for municipalities and private clients throughout Pennsylvania.

Delineating Subbasins and Cross-Checking Calculations Becomes Seamless

The project in Eastern Pennsylvania was complex, requiring not only that the design team accurately define the many subbasins within the 100-acre project area, but also perform multiple stormwater calculations to ensure that the structures were sized correctly. Young took advantage of GeoSTORM’s support of different hydrological methods—from SCS TR-55 to Rational and Modified Rational and others—to cross-check calculations and validate ultimate findings. He leveraged GeoSTORM’s catchment delineation tools and access to multiple cloud-based maps and datasets to analyze terrain and generate drainage boundaries for the project’s many subbasins. Because of GeoSTORM’s integrated design, all aspects of model development were completed easily and efficiently—and within one software platform. Young estimates that by using GeoSTORM, the design team was able to cut total project time by over sixty percent.

Built-In Data Tools and Timely Support Distinguish GeoSTORM

A few of Young’s favorite features include easy downloading of DEM files and other data, automatic delineation of subwatersheds, and multiple scenario simulation for accurate time of concentration calculations. The firm has used CivilGEO’s technical support team extensively, and Young reports that CivilGEO’s experts are so responsive with project-specific support that it almost seems like CivilGEO’s expert is “in-house”. Young maintains that GeoSTORM software is invaluable for any engineering firm that aspires to significantly shorten workflows and increase productivity.

“I think when you look across the reviews online, the number one constant between all of them is time saved. I think that’s invaluable in our professions and I think it helps us tremendously.”
