Tyson Roper of Jones & Associates Consulting Engineers in South Ogden, Utah, is highly knowledgeable about water engineering and its many complex management issues. As a college student, Tyson started his career at the Utah Division of Water Rights, focusing on water rights management. He later specialized in water modeling and is now the lead modeler at Jones & Associates, a multidisciplinary engineering firm.

The firm provides comprehensive project management across various fields, including municipal planning, drinking water systems, irrigation systems, sewer systems, parks, development reviews, and transportation. To support the firm’s diverse needs, Tyson primarily works in water, sewer, groundwater, and stormwater modeling.

Expertise in Water Engineering and Project Management

Tyson has used CivilGEO software on many different types of projects, including the dam failure for Mantua Reservoir using GeoHECRAS and the City of Clearfield Capital Facilities Plan (CFP) using GeoSTORM. He discussed how important CivilGEO’s software was in helping him to complete these large and complex projects, stating that CivilGEO’s software really stands out when solving difficult problems.

Tyson has worked with different engineering software throughout his career, and through that exposure, has developed a strong sense of how software should enhance an engineer’s efficiency and deliver improved results for clients. He says the design of GeoSTORM software, including its many workflow automations and advanced features, can be summed up in one word: innovative. He expands on this by stressing the “all-in-one” capabilities of GeoSTORM, stating that “everything I need to complete a project is available in GeoSTORM.

About Jones & Associates Consulting Engineers

Jones & Associates Consulting Engineers, based in Ogden, Utah, is a civil and municipal engineering firm. The company provides engineering services to municipalities, improvement districts, counties, and state agencies across Northern Utah, serving as the appointed engineer for multiple communities. Known for delivering skilled, dependable, and cost-effective solutions, the firm has built lasting relationships through its client-focused approach.

Driving Efficiency with GeoSTORM

Tyson explained how he can work more effectively with colleagues on projects, especially his GIS specialists. While working on the City of Clearfield CFP, Tyson needed survey data for several hundred manholes. Using GeoSTORM, he marked the location of those manholes and then exported the data directly to his survey team, allowing them to complete the required fieldwork more efficiently.

From a budget perspective, improved efficiency through streamlined workflows leads to substantial cost savings. Tyson estimates that using GeoSTORM cuts engineering time in half. In one example, he discussed how time and money saved on model development with GeoSTORM allowed him to reallocate part of the project’s budget to essential surveying work that would not have been included otherwise.

Innovation, Client Impact, and CivilGEO Partnership

Tyson considers GeoSTORM one of his favorite software platforms, stating that it “goes far beyond any software I’ve used before.” He finds it easy to learn and work with, as well as visually appealing. He often shares models directly with clients because CivilGEO’s striking imagery helps clearly communicate key project milestones. Additionally, Tyson appreciates CivilGEO’s strong commitment to customer service. He describes their technical support team as having an unwavering “we won’t rest until the problem is solved” attitude, which, he notes, is essential when you’re working with a software company.

CivilGEO software enables Tyson to confidently manage the many complex projects that Jones & Associates regularly handles. As a company that is committed to its customer’s success, we are pleased that Tyson considers CivilGEO—and especially GeoSTORM—a vital and essential partner in his work.

“Previously using other software, it took me about 48 hours to complete the project. Using GeoSTORM, I was able to complete it in about 10 hours.”
